The Brooklyn Home Company

The Brooklyn Home Company is a family-run cooperative of artists and builders committed to creating world-class and innovative living spaces in Brooklyn.

Wood Finishes

A defining characteristic of The Brooklyn Home Company’s look is the combination of wood finishes with clean white or black color.  As the design team says, “Wood is timeless. It will outlive every other material in your home and develop a patina over time.”  Much of the design team’s interest in wood comes from Richard, Lyndsay and Bill’s step father and Zach’s uncle.  Richard is a woodworking aficionado and has always shared his passion (and his furniture) with his family.  That, along with his ability to help Fitzhugh collect fallen trees from the golf course behind his house, provides the inspiration and material for many of The Brooklyn Home Company’s wood furniture and finishes.  We utilize wood in countertops, barn doors, wood beams, and reclaimed flooring which provides a nice framework for the rest of our design choices.

TBHCo’s Aesthetic: A Series

Take a look through TBHCo’s projects and you will begin to notice a theme.  Our designers, Lyndsay and Fitzhugh, use a design aesthetic that New York Magazine called, “NeoCountry.”  Our projects are defined by open floor plans, wood finishes, natural light, custom built-in shelves and art.  We build moderns homes with a soft, rural edge.

Each unique element of TBHCo’s design comes with its own unique challenges.  As we have continued to build, we’ve been able to identify which elements work well and which do not.  For the elements that do work, we’ve identified ways in which to incorporate them successfully into each of our projects.

In the next few posts, we will identify the elements that truly define the Brooklyn Home Company aesthetic and how we use these elements.  Our readers will be able to decipher some bits and pieces of where TBHCo’s design identity is derived from.  Stay tuned!

Fitzhugh Karol Custom Countertops

A major component of the Brooklyn Home Company’s design aesthetic is the work of Fitzhugh Karol.  Fitzhugh is primarily a sculptor and woodworker and has received many accolades for his work.  He is TBHC’s “artist in residence” and creates nearly all of the custom elements in our projects.  The quintessential examples of his work are the sapele (a type of wood) custom countertops placed in nearly every TBHC project.

Fitzhugh first created a custom sapele countertop for his home at 5th Street.  Not only is it integral to the design and practicality of the kitchen, it is also a major contributor to the home’s overall aesthetic.  Says Fitzhugh, “It’s nice to have the contrast of stone and wood in the kitchen. The large slab of wood softens things up. Sometimes there’s an opportunity to leave a raw edge or cut a slit to store knives. It’s nice to have a big handmade item in the room you spend the most time in.”

After finding success with the 5th Street countertop, Fitzhugh re-imagined the concept for TBHC’s next projects and his work can now be seen in the Baltic Street, 8th Avenue, and 15th Street locations.

Lindsey Adelman Studio Hanging Lights

Here at The Brooklyn Home Company we are constantly working to stay ahead of the curve in terms of aesthetic and innovation.  As a result, our design team is constantly looking for new and innovative items to place in our projects.  A recent example of this are the Lindsey Adelman hanging lights that have been installed in our 8th Avenue Project.  TBHCo designer Lyndsay Caleo says, “Lindsey Adelman offers the “You Make It” kit on her website.  We love bringing in work from designers like her and other locals whose work we know.”

Day 1: Building the walls and the platforms

Janeene and Tony in Indiana redid their kitchen and living room with a nod to The Brooklyn Home Company’s 5th St house. Janeene sent us before and after photos of the kitchen as well as the white bookshelves in the living room and white floors. The floors are pine 6” wide planks painted with garage floor paint. Tony really nailed the cabinetry and flooring - long hours and it looks beautiful.

Thanks for your interest in our work, great job and thanks for sharing.
